Member Update

Dear Brothers & Sisters:

As United Airlines merged with Continental, so did two separate groups of employees with representation from several different unions. It is almost inevitable that eventually, there will be a representation election where employees decide which union they want to represent them.

United Airlines Ramp Service is represented by the IAM while the Continental Airlines ramp employees are represented by the Teamsters. The United Airlines Storekeepers are represented by the IAM while the Continental Airlines Storekeepers, who are not represented by any union, have recently signed cards to join the IAM. These are just two of the groups affected.

In time, the campaign will intensify, members from one union may solicit members from the other union to get support or someone may ask you to sign an authorization card. It is an unfortunate thing when unions have to battle each other for membership, but we have little choice now. It is a violation of the IAM Constitution for an IAM member to advocate another union.??? Which union you choose is up to you.

The IAMAW clearly has the most experience representing airline employees. The IAM is the largest union of airline employees in the world and has been representing United Airlines employees ever since the beginning of United Airlines. I know there are many benefits to being a member of the IAM and I believe the IAM should be the union of choice for all airline employees. As a member of the CO/UA Merger Team for District 141, I can say that the largest airline union in the world plans to represent the employees from the largest airline in the world. Our Local Lodge has also established a team of dedicated IAM members with this goal in mind. If you believe in your union, we need your help too.

Fraternally,

Larry Wing
