Transport Workers and Machinist Union to Jointly Represent Ground Workers at the "New" American AirlinesMay 14, 2013 Washington, D.C.
The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) and the Transport Workers Union of America (TWU) today announced a partnership to jointly represent nearly 30,000 ground workers at the "new" American Airlines following the merger of American Airlines and US Airways.
This week the two international unions have signed joint agreements to cover the Mechanic & Related, Fleet Service, and Stores employee work groups at the soon to be merged airline. The new labor partnership, to be known as the TWU/IAM Employee Association, will ask the federal National Mediation Board (NMB) to hold elections among the combined employees for each classification after the close of the American-US Airways merger. The election will formalize the joint-council agreement reached this week.
I am proud that our two great unions put the members first in a true demonstration of solidarity," said IAM International President Tom Buffenbarger. "These agreements protect our members' representation, pensions and seniority. Working jointly with the TWU, we will ensure both unions' members are rewarded in this merger."
"This agreement allows us to use our combined strength and resources on behalf of all our members as we move forward at the new American Airlines," said TWU International President James C. Little.
"Both unions have decades of experience representing workers at US Airways and American Airlines and both unions are members of the AFL-CIO."
Following certification, negotiating committees comprised of an equal number of representatives from each union will begin working out the details of collective bargaining agreements to cover the combined carriers' employees.

Time For A Contract — And Our Future! |
September 18, 2012 32 = Bad News 4 U
Dear Members,
Proposition 32, a measure on the November ballot, is the most anti-worker measure we've ever seen. It threatens our jobs, wages, retirement, contracts and more.
In short, it silences union members while giving even more power to corporate special interests and CEOs to attack our rights.
Proposition 32 pretends it's about "stopping special interests" but that's a lie.
Its millionaire anti-union backers don't care about reform. They don't care about our jobs. They certainly don't care about us. They care about their profits, and they'll do anything to get us out of the way.
Prop 32 was carefully written to weaken unions and silence workers.
While the anti-union millionaires backing it say it's balanced, it is actually full of special exemptions for all sorts of corporations, Wall Street firms, billionaire CEOs, and big insurance companies.
Not surprisingly, the very same corporate interests behind the measure all have their own exemptions in Prop 32.
Prop 32 is bad for our families, communities and the state's middle class. We must defeat this deceptive measure.
I urge you to vote on this November, and ask your friends, family and co-workers to do the same.
In Solidarity,
Larry Wing |

The IAM Visits Philippine Air LinesLocal Lodge 1781 initiated the October 27 picketing at the San Francisco offices of the Philippine Consulate and of Philippine Air Lines (PAL) offices. The solidarity action was at the request of PALEA, the airline union at PAL, whose 2600 members in that country have been outsourced.
PAL tore up their contract, in place since 1946, without discussions or negotiations. In an insulting and humiliating gesture, PAL offered to rehire the workers for temporary jobs at reduced wages and benefits.

The Lodge organized a delegation of unions and Filipino community organizations that met with Deputy Consul General Alfonso Ver as picketers marched outside. Above, Rhonda L. Ramiro, Secretary General of Bayan USA, a national Filipino community organization, displays our message. |

IAM Wins Representation Election!!!
The representation election was decided today for the members at United Airlines Ramp Service and Continental Fleet Service. The IAM was victorious.
After a long fight and a concentrated effort in the last month to get out the vote, the IAM received more than 50% of the vote and will be the Union to represent both United Airlines and Continental effective August 12, 2011.
Now, the IAM can move forward from here — representing all the Ramp/Fleet Service members for the new merged United Airlines.
I thank all the persons that voted in this very important election and a special thanks to all the members, both active and retired, which worked extremely hard to insure a victory for the IAM. Without the help of each one of you, the outcome could have been much different.
I especially want to welcome all the new members from Continental. We welcome your participation in the IAM!
Fraternally,
Larry Wing President, LL1781, IAMAW |
